Owego Firefighters Threaten to Quit Over Safety Guidelines
4/28/2014 (Updated 6:44:14 PM)
Could a slew of firefighters in Owego soon walk off the job?
That's the threat if the village board does not approve a new operations manual for the fire department.
The new manual was developed after the death of Matthew Porcari in January of 2013 while fighting a fire in Newark Valley.
The village board tabled the vote in a meeting last week. One firefighter, John Loftus, says the previous manual did have guidelines in place that would have addressed the issues raised after Porcari's death if those guidelines had been administered properly.
He said whether a new manual is adopted or not, it's provisions need to be properly administered. The village board is meeting again tomorrow night at the Hubbard Auditorium at the Tioga County office building, 56 Main St., Owego.
