Bearcats make it three straight with win over Bonnies
4/23/2014 (Updated 10:50:39 PM)OLEAN, N.Y. - Junior left fielder Jake Thomas continued his torrid stretch with a 4-for-5, 2 RBI showing and senior DH Shaun McGraw belted a three-run home run to pace visiting Binghamton (14-19) to a 7-2 win over St. Bonaventure Wednesday afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
Thomas got things started with a two-run double in the first inning - part of a four-run first-inning outburst for the Bearcats, who have now won four straight and five of their last six. Sophomore first baseman Reed Gamache followed with an RBI single and freshman shortstop Brendan Skidmore added a sacrifice fly to pad the margin.
The Bonnies scored single runs in the second and fifth inning to cut their deficit in half. But McGraw gave BU some breathing room with his long ball in the seventh inning. With two outs, senior second baseman Daniel Nevares drew a walk and Thomas followed with a single. McGraw then sent a ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
Freshman Casey Wenzel (W, 2-2) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of work. Wenzel (3.66 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four. Junior Greg Ostner pitched 2.1 clean innings and sophomore Tsuyoshi Horibata closed it out with 2.0 scoreless frames. Ostner entered in the fifth after St. Bonaventure had strung together three consecutive two-out singles. He stranded two baserunners by inducing a fly ball for the final out and gave up just one hit in his outing.
Thomas, who had two doubles in the game, has been on an absolute tear of late. He’s raised his batting average 61 points in the last seven days and has racked up 10 RBI in his last four games. Thomas is now hitting .330 and with the two driven in on Wednesday, has boosted his season RBI count to 28 - just two off the America East lead. Thomas already leads the conference in home runs (6) and slugging (.565).
Binghamton (6-8 AE) hosts first-place Hartford (22-14, 9-2 AE) in a key three-game set this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday and then finish up with a single game on Sunday.
