B.C. Dems Call for Ethics Investigation on Bijoy Datta
4/22/2014 (Updated 11:26:10 PM)Democrats in the Broome County Legislature are calling for an ethics investigation of Deputy County Executive Bijoy datta.
At issue are emails sent by Datta to county workers urging them to participate in County Executive Debbie Preston's re-election campaign in 2012.
The democrats cite election law which prohibits a public officer from using authority over employment to affect the political actions of other public workers.
On Tuesday, Broome County district Attorney Gerald Mollen did tell Fox 40 his office is reviewing the emails.
Daniel Reynolds, Broome County Legislative Minority Leader) said: "We are taking this action today because we believe it is the right thing to do. We expect more out of our public officers to promote good government and an effort to promote good and fair elections."
Broome County Legislator Jason Garnar said, "This isn't a political issue. This is a legal issue. I think we need to hear something from the county executive as to what she think of all this."
Debbie Preston has not offered comment.
In a statement Datta said, "I'vealways held myself to high ethical and professional standards, and will continue to do so. I used language that was too strong in a couple of personal emails a couple of years ago. I look forward to a positive outcome from any inquiry if they take place."
