Two Million Dollar STREDC Telemedicine Grant for Rural Health Care

More than two million dollars is closer to making its way to the Southern Tier to enhance health care in rural areas...

This money is part of a $5.6 million package approved by Empire State Development on Thursday.

The grants would be used to buy tele-health systems, equipment, software, mobile audio/video devices, and vehicles.

Some of that money would make its way to Binghamton University to build labs with the computing power to monitor the vital signs and manage the medical data of patients.

"So it's a hot area right now. People want to learn more about health system sciences. And to have this physical infrastructure that comes with this grant, the equipment,  the computational power, the software that we're going to need to analyze these huge data sets is a great lift," said Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger.

According to the state, four of the eight counties in the Southern Tier rank among the unhealthiest in New York.
