Tight contest does not go Bearcats way

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse fell to visiting Colgate 10-8, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats (6-8, 0-3 AE) held a two-goal halftime lead, but were outscored 6-2 in the second half by the Raiders (7-7, 4-3 Patriot), dropping their fifth straight contest.

Binghamton registered six different goal scorers led by freshman Callon Williams, who netted her second career hat trick, tallying three goals and an assist. Freshman Bri Arthur and sophomore Sophia Racciatti each recorded a goal and an assist.
Sophomore goalie Erin McNulty played stout in net making 10 saves for the Bearcats. McNulty, who was tagged with her eighth loss of the season, recorded her third game of at least 10 saves in 2014.

“I thought we started strong and executed our game plan in the first half,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “Our offense was efficient while our defense was consistent across the board. We made some big stops in the second half, however it came down to shot placement and keeping our poise when it really counted.”

Binghamton, who held a 6-4 lead at the break, opened the second half scoring as Williams weaved through the Colgate defense for her second goal of the afternoon handing the Bearcats its largest lead of the game. Colgate quickly answered however, going on a 4-0 run while holding Binghamton scoreless for over 14 minutes to take a 8-7 lead with 16:38 remaining.

Williams ended the Binghamton drought after scooping up a ground ball off a save by Colgate goalie Jennie Berglin and fired the rebound into the net to even the game at eight with 12:12 left to play. The Bearcats had opportunities to take the lead, but seven second-half turnovers hampered their productivity.

Following a Binghamton turnover, Colgate leading scorer Megan Ark (42 goals) raced down the field and fired a shot on McNulty who made the save from point blank range with less than three minutes to play. However, Colgate corralled the rebound and netted the game-winner moments later. The Raiders tacked on an insurance goal with just over a minute to play to cap the scoring.

The Bearcats limited Ark, who is 13th in the nation in goals per game (3.23), to just one goal on six shots. However, the difference in the second half was the draw circle, where Colgate won eight of the nine draws in the final 30 minutes.

After scoring just 10 goals in their past three games, the Bearcats burst out of the gates netting the contest’s first two goals to take a 2-0 lead five minutes into the contest. Colgate responded with a 3-0 run however, to take its first lead, 3-2, with 22:40 to play in the opening half.

Unfazed by the Raider spurt, the freshman duo of Williams and Arthur netted a pair of unassisted goals to put the Bearcats back up, 4-3, at the 17:36 mark. Continuing the Binghamton run, Racciatti found a cutting Valerie DeNapoli to put the Bearcats up two. After a Colgate goal, junior midfielder Renee Kiviat netted a free position goal with just 10 seconds left in the half to hand the Bearcats a 6-4 lead at the break.

Colgate held a slim advantage in total shots (25-22), but doubled Binghamton’s shot production in the second half (14-7). Both teams struggled from the eight-meter going a combined 2-9, each netting one free position goal. The Bearcats captured 13 ground balls compared to the Raiders’ 12, but committed 13 turnovers opposed to Colgate’s 10.

The Bearcats return to conference play when they travel to Burlington, Vermont on Saturday, April 19 for a noon meeting with the Catamounts. Last year, Binghamton slipped past Vermont 7-6 to win its first America East opener in program history.
