B-Mets bats come alive on the road for 4th straight

MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets backed up Darin Gorski’s 10-strikeout performance with a dozen hits, including two home runs in a 9-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Gorski set a personal B-Mets career-high in strikeouts to lead the team to their fourth straight win.

The B-Mets flexed their muscles to grab the lead in the second. Jayce Boyd started the inning by smoking a double off the center field wall against New Hampshire starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx. Dustin Lawley followed by threading a towering two-run homer over the left-field fence, giving Binghamton a 2-0 advantage.

Gorski cruised through his first two innings, needing just 16 pitches to post a pair of perfect frames. New Hampshire threatened in the third with a one-out triple by Michael Crouse, but failed to crack the scoreboard.

Fisher Cats second baseman Jon Berti used speed to put his team on the board in the fourth. He led off the frame on bunt single down the first base line, stole second, swiped third and scampered home when Kevin Plawecki’s throw to third tailed into left field. Gorski followed by issuing a pair of one-out walks, but avoided harm by coaxing an inning-ending double play grounder out of Gabe Jacobo.
Brian Burgamy gave the B-Mets more breathing room in a flash in the fifth. Following a pair of two-out singles by Matt Reynolds and Kyle Johnson, Burgamy blasted a 2-1 pitch from Bibens-Dirkx off the base of the video board in right-center field. His first homer as a B-Met pushed the lead to 5-1.

Gorski preserved the lead with a perfect fifth inning and worked around two singles to post a scoreless sixth. With runners on first and second, the southpaw capped his stellar performance by striking out Ryan Schimpf after a nine-pitch at-bat.

The B-Mets turned on the afterburners against the Fisher Cats bullpen. They plated a run on two hits and a walk against Randy Boone in the seventh and added three more on three doubles, a walk and an error in the ninth.

Gorski (1-0) surrendered just one unearned run on three hits over six innings to earn his first win of the season. Jon Velasquez and Adam Kolarek tossed three shutout innings from the bullpen to secure the win. Bibens-Dirkx (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (5-2) continue their four-game set against the Fisher Cats on Friday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Rainy Lara takes the hill for the second time this year against RHP Scott Copeland. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Darin Gorski’s professional career-high in strikeouts (13) came as a St. Lucie Met against the Dunedin Blue Jays (5/26/11)…Binghamton is hitting .308 (44-for-143) during their four-game winning streak…Matt Reynolds went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the ninth spot in the batting order…Darrell Ceciliani extended his season-opening hitting streak to five games.
