BU Softball swept in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. Binghamton (12-12, 3-2 AE) dropped a pair of games to Albany (15-8, 5-3 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Varsity Field. The Great Danes won the opener 6-0 and took the nightcap 4-3.

Brittany MacFawn tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener. She struck out eight batters and issued only one walk.

Offensively, the Great Danes were led in the first game by Maggie Cocks, who went 3-for-4, homered and scored twice. Vicky McFarland drove in a pair of runs.

MacFawn raised her record to 7-5 while senior pitcher Demi Laney fell to 10-5.

Sophomore catcher Taylor Chaffee went 2-for-2 with a double in the opener.

In the second game, Kelly Costello drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Great Danes the walk-off win. There was one out at the time.

In a game that went back and forth, the Bearcats drew first blood when sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh tripled home a run in the top of the first inning.  McFarland tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when she scored on a groundout by Cocks.

The Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning when freshman outfielder Gabby Bracchi scored on a fielding error. In the bottom of the frame, however, Marlin Solano singled home a pair of runs, giving Albany a 3-2 lead.

Down to their last out, the Bearcats tied the game on a RBI single by Bracchi in the top of the seventh inning. Binghamton, however, stranded two runners at the end of the frame.

MacFawn blew the save but got the win in the nightcap. The loss was tagged to freshman pitcher Annika Wiesinger, who is now 2-6.
Bracchi went 2-for-3 in the second game and finished the day 3-for-6. She also scored a pair of runs.

Binghamton heads to Syracuse for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
