Binghamton Baseball sweeps doubleheader against UMBC for 4th win in a row

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior left fielder Jake Thomas belted a pair of home runs (4 RBI) and Binghamton baseball completed a series sweep of visiting UMBC (6-18, 3-6 AE) with an 8-4 win in Sunday’s nightcap from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats (9-13, 4-4 America East) won the opener 7-3 behind seven shutout innings from starter Jake Cryts and three RBI from freshman catcher Eddie Posavec. Binghamton has now won four in a row and five of its last six to climb into fourth place in the America East standings.

Thomas went 6-for-8 with four RBI and three runs scored on the day. In Game 2, he came to the plate with two on and one out in the fourth inning and ripped the first offering over the right field fence for a three-run home run.

That shot extended BU’s lead to 7-1. Two innings later, Thomas led off the sixth and took an 0-1 pitch into the bullpen in right for a solo shot - his second of the game and team-high fourth of the season.

UMBC led 1-0 before the Bearcats tallied four runs in the third inning to take control. Binghamton strung together six hits - four straight after two outs were recorded. Thomas’ blast added three more in the fourth and allowed BU to absorb the three-spot UMBC put on the board in the fifth.

Sophomore third baseman Reed Gamache went 3-for-4 with an RBI and senior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby and junior right fielder Zach Blanden added two hits apiece.

Junior Mike Urbanski (W, 2-1) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work. Urbanski scattered four hits and four runs. Junior Greg Ostner notched his first save of the season with 1.2 perfect innings.
In the opener, BU snapped a 3-3 eighth-inning tie with four decisive runs.

After seeing a 3-0 lead vanish in the top of the frame, the Bearcats recorded four hits in the home half. Ruby and junior shortstop John Howell hit back-to-back singles with one out and with runners on first and third, Posavec gave BU a 4-3 lead with a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt to the right of the mound. After a fly out, Bereszniewicz laced a two-out RBI single to left and Howell just sidestepped the catcher with BU’s fifth run scored. A botched fly ball in center gave the Bearcats their final two runs.

Posavec went 2-for-4 with three RBI. In the fifth inning, he drove a two-run double to right center to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. A Blanden RBI single pushed the lead to 3-0.

Thomas was 3-for-4.Cryts allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings but was denied the win when UMBC rallied off BU’s bullpen with three unearned runs. He lowered his season ERA to 3.21 in eight starts. Junior Mike Bunal (W, 1-1) pitched the final 1.1 innings to get the win.

Binghamton entered the weekend hitting just .233 but registered 39 hits and 31 runs in the three-game series (.379). The Bearcats improved to 40-9 all-time against UMBC.
