Bearcats Women Lacrosse falls to #15 Stony Brook 16-3

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team fell to visiting No. 15 Stony Brook, 16-3, in an America East matchup Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats (6-6, 0-2 AE) dropped its second straight contest to a ranked opponent as the Seawolves (10-2, 2-0 AE) controlled the game throughout, outshooting Binghamton 32-12.

“I think we played in spurts today and showed a little bit of fire here and there,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “However, we are still trying to string together a full 60-minute performance. It was nice to see our defense get a few quality stops and make the Stony Brook offense work for their shots. I was proud of how our defense played and made adjustments against a very prolific offense.”

Binghamton was led by freshman Bri Arthur who recorded a team-high three points with a goal and two assists. Arthur netted her 31st goal of the season against the Seawolves to set a new Binghamton freshman record for goals breaking the previous mark (30) set by Becky Green in 2004. Sophomore Sophia Racciatti was the beneficiary of Arthur’s two assists, recording her sixth multi-goal game of the season.

In the first half, Stony Brook scored the game’s first nine goals before an Arthur free position goal put Binghamton on the board with 2:32 remaining in the opening 30 minutes.

The Seawolves displayed why they boast the nation’s top defense (4.73 ga/g) forcing the Bearcats into 12 turnovers and allowing just five shots in the first half. Stony Brook would tack on a goal to take a 10-1 lead into the break.

The Seawolves continued to roll in the second half going on a 6-0 over the first 20 minutes to take a commanding 16-1 advantage. Binghamton created offensive chances late as Arthur found Racciatti twice cutting across the fan to score the game’s final two goals.

The Bearcats battled the Seawolves in the second half winning five of the nine draw controls, but the stingy defense of the America East preseason favorites was too overwhelming.
Sophomore goalie Erin McNulty made a game-high nine saves, stopping four of Stony Brook’s seven free position chances. McNulty also caused a pair of turnovers and picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Binghamton went 14-for-15 in the clear game including 9-for-9 in the first half. The Bearcats also did well in the draw circle winning nine of the 21 draws. However, Stony Brook did force 21 Binghamton turnovers and won the ground ball battle 25-14.

Binghamton has almost a full week off before heading to New Hampshire for an America East matchup in Durham on Saturday, April 12. The Bearcats and Wildcats are set for a noon start from Memorial Field.
