State Budget Deal Kills Moreland Commission

Part of the state budget deal included an end to the Moreland Commission, which had been set up by Governor Cuomo last July to investigate corruption in Albany.

Cuomo said the legislature's agreement on strengthening laws on bribery and corruption, as well as beefing up enforcement of election law allowed him to end the commission.

Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen was a member of the commission. He says the commission's report released in December was key in getting the legislature to act on bribery and corruption laws.

He says one consequence of the end of the commission is that the all of the information it could have gathered by it's subpoena power will now not come to light.

"I'm disappointed with some things. I don't think the Moreland Commission, to be quite blunt, should have been ended as part of a budget negotiation," said Mollen.

Mollen says the commission does have a substantial body of information about possible criminal conduct by legislators. He says the commission's co-chairs have indicated that they will work out a system where that information is forwarded to state prosecutors.
