Tax Collection Scam
4/1/2014 (Updated 10:53:58 PM)Some New Yorkers have been targeted recently by individuals attempting to solicit personal information and and even payments.
On Tuesday the state division of Consumer Protection and the state tax department alerted consumers to phone and email scams from individuals claiming to be from the IRS.
The scammers make threats of fines and even arrests if consumers don't immediately pay a false claim of unpaid taxes.
A tip to avoid falling victim to this type of scam? The tax department and IRS will always make first contact with a letter containing a number to verify it was sent by the agency.
