Running Of The Bears 5K
3/29/2014 (Updated 3/31/2014 9:55:15 AM)Hundreds of runners turned out this morning for the second annual Running of the Bears 5K to support the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.
Prader-Willi Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes those affected to experience a chronic sense of hunger and often leads to obesity.
The Vestal High School's Varsity Club sponsors the event. The club decided to donate to the association because one of their teachers has a granddaughter that suffers from the disease.
"I think it gives them a little extra motivation. I mean, our kids at Vestal are really into community service, so we don't have any trouble getting them out. many of them are running their very first road race, for a good cause," Sue Darpino, Race Director.
All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Prader-Willi Association. Last year the race raised about 7 thousand dollars, and organizers say they hope to raise even more from this year's event.
