Flood Mitigation Big Issue in Owego Mayor's Race
3/17/2014 (Updated 7:34:03 PM)Voters in the Village of Owego head to the polls Tuesday to vote for mayor...
Incumbent Kevin Millar is running against downtown businesswoman Lisa Curatolo, who owns the Goat Boy in the village.
For a village still recovering from the flood of 2011, both see flood mitigation as a major issue, with Curatolo wanting to see the village act as more of a liaison between FEMA and residents.
"They've been kind of left out there on their own to do their own mitigation. I think it's time for the village board and the village mayor to turn to and help the village residents," said Curatolo.
Ii've been in phone and email contact with almost all the people who have buyouts and elevations over the course of the past 18 months now. What we're waiting for is for the signed contract to come from Albany," said Millar.
Millar said that if re-elected he will continue to work to move the village's DPW building from the floodplain and enroll the village in the federal community rating system in order to lower flood insurance rates.
