Army Father Surprises Daughter with Early Return Home
3/12/2014 (Updated 7:00:44 PM)Second grader Ashlynn Orcutt stood in front of hundreds of Vestal Hills Elementary students today, ready to tell them why her dad was so special.
"My dad works in the army. He is a sergeant and is in Afghanistan," said Ashlynn Orcutt.
Her father, Scott Orcutt, has been stationed in Afghanistan for 10 months now. He wasn't scheduled to make his return until mid-May....
What Ashlynn didn't know was that her dad was coming home today.
"She missed him, she talked about him constantly. But she knew he was coming home and she was determined that she would be there," said Lucille Frattone, Ashlynn's teacher.
While Scott was supposed to wait until the end of Ashlynn's essay, teachers and administrators couldn't hold him back from running to his daughter.
Ashlynn was speechless.
"Happy...excited," said Ashlynn.
For the past 10 months, Ashlynn and Scott have only seen each other through a computer screen.
"Skype. Skype or Facebook with them," said Scott.
And when I asked Ashlynn if she was going back to class today, she said no way.
"No. I'm going to stay with my daddy," said Ashlynn.
Even though the heartwarming reunion interrupted Ashlynn's essay, her final words rang true today. She wrote: I love him and he loves me too. He is in my heart all the time.
