Buyck on Common Core Corrections: Proceed with Caution

You might call them mid-course corrections but BOCES Superintendent Allen Buyck thinks those making the adjustments should proceed with caution.

The Common Core Implementation Panel, formed just last month, on Tuesday released a series of recommendations to improve the controversial curriculum in New York State: among them: protection of students from inappropriate high-stakes testing, better support for parents, and better training for teachers.

Buyke welcomes the effort to re-examine Common Core, but remains cautious:

"I'm always concerned about a group of people getting in a room and deciding how to evaluate and change something that they weren't apart of while it was created the way it is and understand why it was created the way it is before they decide to dismantle it. So I hope that this is the start of a conversation," said CEO and District Superintendent, Allen Buyck.

The implementation panel notes that Common Core has raised alarm and serious concerns among parents, teachers, administrators and community leaders.
