Suny Broome holds Blood Drive

Dozens of students at Suny Broome helped the American Red Cross meet a critical need at a blood drive at the school today.

The brutal winter has forced the cancellation of a number of drives - 43 in New York State since January alone.

"The red cross nationally has to collect 15,000 units a day just to keep the blood in the hospitals for the patients. So you can see kind of where that leaves us. Here in binghamton alone we lost 260 units," said Sheila Sullivan of the American Red Cross.

"Whenever I see the opportunity to donate blood I always jump on it. I've donated maybe two or three times before. And my first time was a double-red (donation) so i figured, 'why not?'" said Suny Broome student Anthony Bennett.

A double-red donation uses a special machine to allow the donor to give two units of red blood cells.

There will be another blood  drive at Suny Broome next Thursday.
