Bearcats dip to 1-2 in loss to Big Red

Vestal, N.Y.Binghamton (1-2) fell to visiting and 15th ranked Cornell (2-0) 14-8 late Tuesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Big Red received six goals from senior attack Dan Lintner in the 11th meeting between the two upstate New York schools. Junior Paul ODonnell scored a pair of goals and also added an assist in the loss.

The Bearcats spent most of the first half trying to climb their way back as the visitors quickly jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead just five minutes into action. Lintner scored a hat trick in the first 5:14 of play and the Big Red enjoyed a 10-0 shot advantage before BU was able to get on the board. A nice give-and-go between juniors J.T. Hauck and Paul ODonnell resulted in an easy finish for Hauck, netting his first goal of the 2014 season.

Cornell rounded out the scoring in the first quarter, taking a 4-1 advantage into the second. The Big Red won the first five faceoffs and held a 16-3 advantage in shots after the first 15 minutes of play.

Mitchell Rick cut the Cornell lead to just two, 4-2, with his man-up goal just three minutes and change into the second stanza. Senior captain Michael Antinozzi made a smooth extra pass to Rick who laced a 12-yard shot past Cornells keeper Brennan Donville. From there, the Ivy League school responded with a 5-0 run, headlined by two more goals from Lintner to take a 9-2 lead with 2:06 remaining in the half. The Bearcats received goals from Alex Doerflein and ODonnell late in the quarter to bring the score up to 9-4 in favor of Cornell at intermission.

Trailing 10-4 in the third, BU strung together a bit of a run to bring things within reach. Rick returned the favor on the man-up, this time feeding Antinozzi for his second goal of the season at the 14:04 mark. The Fallston, Md. native bounced a shot from more than 15 yards out to beat Donville. Just six seconds later off a faceoff win from Doerflein, the Bearcats scored again, this time off a lefty strike from ODonnell. Red shirt senior Matt Springer got into the act, netting a quick stick goal off the cutting pass from Tucker Nelson who found him behind the cage. Springers goal brought BU to within three, 10-7, with 4:31 left in the third.

The visitors put an end to Binghamtons 4-1 run with a goal from Matt Donovan late in the third. Cornell followed that goal up with a pair of goals mid-way through the fourth to take a hold of the game at 13-7. Both teams traded scores down the stretch as Binghamton fell to 0-2 at home this season with the loss.

Seven different players scored for Binghamton, highlighted by two from ODonnell who now has a team-leading seven goals in three contests. Alex Doerflein had a strong game out of the midfield, compiling a goal and an assist to go along with nine faceoff wins, seven ground balls and a caused turnover.

Antinozzi had three points (1g, 2a) on Tuesday, improving his point scoring streak to 34 games. In net, junior goalie Max Schefler made 11 saves in the loss and now sits in third place alone on the Binghamton saves list with 197 for his career.

The Bearcats will be on the road for their next contest, heading to Geneva to take on Hobart on Saturday at 1 p.m.. The Statesmen (0-2) have a pair of common opponents this season, losing earlier this year to Siena and most recently to Cornell 12-8 on Feb. 22.
