Bearcats fall to Siena in home opener

Vestal, N.Y.Binghamton (1-1) mens lacrosse lost their home opener 13-9 to visiting Siena (2-1) on Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Saints, who were preseason MAAC favorites, had a trio of players record a hat trick powering them to their second straight win. Matt Springer paced Binghamton with four goals in the loss and in the process became the first BU player to hit the 100-goal mark in their 13-year Division I history.

Despite winning 15-of-26 faceoffs and committing four less turnovers than their counterparts, Binghamton was unable to put a stop to the potent Siena offense. A five-goal second quarter gave the visitors a 7-3 lead at half, a lead they would not relinquish. The Bearcats got to within two, trailing 10-8 with just over eight minutes left, but couldnt muster the comeback as Siena went on a late 3-0 run and eventually secured the 13-9 road victory.

BU had six different goal scorers in their home opener, highlighted by a four-goal performance from Springer. His man-up goal with seconds remaining in the third quarter made history for the Binghamton program, recording his 100th career goal.

In the first quarter, Siena got some timely saves from their goalie Tommy Cordts and finished on a pair of opportunities to go ahead 2-0 after the first 10 minutes. Binghamton broke through at the 1:57 mark on junior Emmett OHaras first tally of the season. Kelly Donigan sliced the Siena defense with a diagonal pass that found OHara who beat Cordts. With four seconds remaining in the quarter, BU capitalized off a Siena mistake to score the equalizer. Alex Doerflein sent a low lining shot that one hopped past the keeper to knot things up at two. On the ensuing face off, junior Tucker Nelson nearly beat the buzzer on a goal but the score was called off by the officials.

Binghamton took the lead early in the second on a goal scored by Springer. Fellow senior Brandon Planck found him, earning his first point of the 2014 season. From there on, Siena grabbed hold of the momentum. They wrapped up the half on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a pair of highlight goals from junior Conor Prunty. Siena was efficient on their shooting in the second, scoring on 5-of-8 shot attempts.

Springer put an end to the visitors run early in the third quarter, beating Cordts on a quick stick finish. Nelson delivered a perfect pass to a cutting Springer who would not be denied. Siena would bounce back shortly, scoring three of the games next four scores to take a 10-5 lead with under a minute remaining in the quarter. Springer cut the deficit to four with a late-goal on the assist from junior Paul ODonnell, closing out the quarter with three goals of his own and 100 for his storied career.

In the fourth, Binghamton continued to charge back. Kelly Donigan caused a Siena turnover and found a wide open Nelson who finished right at the doorstep. Just over three minutes later, sophomore Mitchell Rick sent a blistering shot over the right shoulder of Cordts, making the score 10-8 with about eight minutes left.

With time winding down on Binghamtons comeback, Siena received a goal from Jordan Barlow and had good fortune on the man-up, scoring a pair of times to collect their second win of the season. Michael Antinozzi added a late goal for Binghamton, notching his 67th career tally of his career and moving into second-place all-time on the Binghamton scoring list.

Donigan, Planck and ODonnell all recorded two assists on Saturday. Sophomores T.J. DiSanto and Anthony Lombardo each recorded their first career points in the loss.

Binghamton has a quick turn around, facing Cornell on Tuesday from the Bearcats Sports Complex at 4 p.m.. Cornell is ranked 16th in the country and comes in having just beat Hobart 12-8 on Saturday.
