Libous Pushes Bill to End Abuse of Public Assistance Cards
2/4/2014 (Updated 10:56:41 PM)Senator Tom Libous hosted a press conference Tuesday in Albany to push his Public Assistance Integrity Act.
Currently under state law, EBT public assistance cards come with a cash benefit portion that can be spent at liquor stores, casinos and strip club. Libous is proposing to pass a bill that would prevent those types of purchases.
"What it does, is it takes the fraud out of a system that is designed to help people get back on their feet. When people abuse the system like that, it takes away from the good people that deserve the help," said Sen. Tom Libous.
The bill has passed the Senate the last two years, but has died in the Assembly. The act is supported by Governor Cuomo in his budget proposal.
