Disability Does Not Mean Inability

Breaking down barriers facing those with mental disabilities is the goal for Catholic Charities employee Jo DiFulvio.

Tuesday at Endwell Rotary she spoke on the importance of hiring those with disabilities.

The unemployment rate in New York State 7.1%, according to DiFulvio the unemployment rate for the disabled is 70%.

Some of the myths that she is trying to break down are the people with mental disabilities should be restricted to restaurant work or one task jobs.

"Disability does not mean inability. So we're always looking to bust the myths about what a disability is and what it looks like. The face of disability has changed greatly," said Director of Employment Services Joe DiFulvio.

Catholic Charities runs the Portfolio Cafe in downtown Binghamton which is a training program to integrate those with disabilities back into the workforce.
