Bearcats fall in back-and-forth game
1/30/2014 (Updated 10:51:15 PM)VESTAL, N.Y. Shannon Samuels scored 22 points and Lindsey Doucette added 19 points, leading UMass Lowell (3-17, 2-7 AE) to a 65-54 win over Binghamton (4-17, 1-7 AE) in an America East womens basketball game on Thursday night at the Events Center.
Samuels, who drained five three-point field goals, scored 16 of her points in the first half as the River Hawks took a 28-25 lead. Doucette, meanwhile, scored 15 of her points during the final 20 minutes as UMass Lowell rallied in the final six minutes of regulation for the victory.
This was a tough loss, head coach Nicole Scholl said. I thought we did a handful of things better tonight but we froze in the second half against their pressure defense. Their (key) players all came through with big games tonight.
The loss overshadowed a career night by sophomore forward Morgan Murphy, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. In addition to reaching her highest totals in each category, Murphy notched her first career double-double. She has now reached double figures in scoring three times in the past four games.
After trailing for most of the game, the Bearcats went up 46-43 on a jumper by Murphy with 5:18 left in regulation. The River Hawks scored the next four points before Murphy tied the game at 48-48 with 4:30 left to go.
From there, however, the River Hawks went on a 9-2 run over the ensuing 2:25 to go up 57-50 with 2:05 remaining in regulation. Samuels and Doucette each had two points during that spurt.
Murphy pulled the Bearcats to within 59-54 at the 1:19 mark but Jasmine McRoy, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, made six free throws down the stretch to lock up the win.
Senior forward Stephanie Jensen dished out a career-high eight assists for the Bearcats.
Binghamton heads to New Hampshire on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
