Schumer: New Contract Could Be Coming to Lockheed
1/24/2014 (Updated 10:43:17 PM)Senator Schumer announced to nearly 100 people at Lockheed Martin in Owego the possibility of big government money coming and the opportunity to create nearly 400 jobs.
"There is 333 million dollars this year for the rescue helicopter. That is now in stone. It's in the budget," the Senator Schumer said.
The money comes from a bill passed that creates 100 new combat rescue helicopters. An additional 94 million dollars was also budgeted for new a new fleet of Marine One Presidential Helicopters. Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky Aircraft submitted a joint bid for both contracts.
"This could mean as many as 400 jobs right here at Lockheed Martin in the Southern Tier," Senator Schumer said.
Bidding is closed for the rescue helicopters and Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky were the only bid for the contract. The funding for both projects is only secured through 2014. A contractor can't be chosen until funding is secured for 2015 and 2016. But Lockheed Martin says a decision should be made within the next three months.
"What will happen then is once the Air Force makes a decision. They have all the money in place. Then they have some steps that they go through to review and make a final decision to award to Lockheed and Sikorsky,"
And why the vice president of the company is so sure they'll get the contract.. he says they make the best helicopters in the world.
