Tougher Penalties for Vehicular Manslaughter?

Two days after a Binghamton woman received three to nine years in prison for a drunk-driving crash that killed three people, family members of one of the victims are calling for tougher penalties.

The mother, father, and sister of 25-year-old Robert Morehead III met with Assemblyman Clifford Crouch Friday morning.

Crouch said there is legislation in committee in Albany that would toughen penalties, possibly even provide a sentence of 25 years to life for Vehicular Manslaughter.

"Some people say it was an accident. But somebody chose to drink and drive. That's not an accident," said Assemblyman Clifford Crouch (R), 122nd District.

"We're going to make this our new mission and we're going to try to get a little more justice for other people. It's too late for Rob but it's not too late for others," said Heather Tucker, Robert Morehead III's sister.

Crouch says the bill in the assembly that would call for tougher penalties still needs a senate sponsor.

39-year-old Carri Michalski and 45-year-old Robert Marshall were also killed in that crash in May of 2011.
