Matthew Porcari Remembered

A flag lowered to half staff, a candle lit and a wreath laid.  On Tuesday, the Owego community came together to remember a fallen hero.

"He was the ultimate commitment to firefighting," said Earl Hartman, Owego Trustee.

A year ago Tuesday, Matthew Porcari died while fighting a blaze at a Newark Valley home when the first floor gave way and he fell into the basement.

His uncle and fellow firefighter Lee Dunham had been at the scene.

"I think about him and I spend a lot of time at station three talking to him and just making myself feel at ease," said Dunham.

Porcari was 34-years-old.  He served the department over 15 years and was captain of the Croton Hose Company #3.

"He would give the shirt off his back for anyone and he always had a smile on his face,"said Scott Gunrey, fire chief.

Porcari left behind a wife, children and his fellow firefighters say he also left behind an example to follow.

"More than anything else his enthusiasm was that we have a commitment to the community and a commitment to each other and the department and his brothers," said Hartman.
