B-Sens pound Sound Tigers for Biscuit Goal Plus One
1/17/2014 (Updated 1/18/2014 1:02:45 PM)BINGHAMTON, N.Y. The Binghamton Senators overcame a slow start en route to a 6-2 win over the visiting Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Mike Hoffman added to his team-lead in points for the season chipping in two goals and an assist while linemate Stephane Da Costa assisted on four goals to lead the B-Sens to victory. Andrew Hammond played solid between the pipes turning aside 30 of the 32 shots faced for his tenth victory for the year.
Bridgeport struck first on the power play 7:26 into the opening period when Anders Lee scored his team-leading 16th goal for the year off assists from Mike Halmo and Ryan Strome. Andre Petersson evened the scoreboard just past the midway point of the first for his 12th marker of the year. Fredrik Claesson fed the puck to a waiting Petersson who ripped a shot from inside the blue line over Sound Tigers goaltender Kenny Reiter. The teams skated the remainder of the opening period scoreless heading to the locker room knotted 1-1.
Binghamtons power-play unit needed just 1:16 in the middle frame to take the first lead of the contest when Hoffman received a cross-ice pass from Da Costa for his eighth power-play strike of the year. The B-Sens doubled their lead just past the midway point of the period when Petersson sent home his second goal of the night making it 3-1. Petersson took a pass from Danny New and carried it to the right circle before wristing a shot past Reiter. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Bridgeport cut the Sens lead to 3-2 when Halmo beat Hammond low for his 13th goal of the season. However, the B-Sens regained their two goal cushion less than 30 seconds later when Cole Schneider netted his 14th goal of the season. Da Costa intercepted a Sound Tigers pass and sent it to Schneider waiting on the backdoor of the crease, who then lifted the puck over Reiters pad making the score 4-2 heading into the final intermission.
Matt Puempel put home a power-play goal just 4:24 into the final period following a flurry of shots in front to extend the score to 5-2. Bridgeport managed just nine shots on goal in the final period while the B-Sens put 13 on net. Hoffman notched his 18th on the year with less than three minutes remaining to move the final score to 6-2. Reiter made 18 saves in the losing effort dropping to 7-8-2 for the season. Parker Milner came in for the Sound Tigers to start the final period allowing two goals on 13 shots. Petersson finished with two goals for Binghamton while Claesson and Chris Wideman finished with two helpers apiece.
Binghamton travels to Syracuse tomorrow night to finish their weekend in a 7:00p.m. matchup versus the Crunch.
