B-Sens drop game, season series to Phantoms

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.  The B-Sens fell on the road tonight 5-3 to the Adirondack Phantoms in their final of a six-game season series.  Binghamton was blanked on six power-play opportunities while Phantoms goaltender Yann Danis turned aside 31 of 34 shots to earn the win.

Adirondack dominated the puck for much of the opening period limiting Binghamton s offensive chances.  Petr Straka put the Phantoms up 1-0 at 12:42 in the period when he skated through the B-Sens defense and wristed a shot over the shoulder of Andrew Hammond.  Kris Newbury fired a wrist shot to the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining giving the hosts a 2-0 lead heading to intermission.  Hammond finished the first 20 minutes of play stopping 16 of 18 shots faced while Danis was perfect turning aside all 11 B-Sens tries.

Binghamton controlled the puck better during the middle frame outshooting the Phantoms 12-11.  Corey Cowick broke an 18-game goalless streak at the 7:35 spot of the period when he carried a feed from Fredrick Claesson past the Phantoms defense for his fifth goal of the season.  Just over two minutes later, Tye McGinn restored the Phantoms two-goal lead with his seventh of the year on a power play at 9:37.  Binghamton added to their league-lead in short-handed strikes when Wacey Hamilton put home his second goal of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the second period and cut the lead to 3-2.  With Hamilton s man-down goal, Binghamton currently leads the American Hockey League with 12 short-handed goals for the year. 

The Phantoms used less than five minutes of the third period to return the lead to two goals.  Jason Akeson beat Hammond for his twelfth tally for the year off a great pass from Ben Holmstrom making the score 4-2.  Cowick knocked home his second goal of the night with less than a minute remaining, but the Phantoms answered with an empty-net tally to push the final score to 5-3 with only seconds remaining.

Hammond stopped 29 of 33 shots in the losing effort while Danis earned his sixth victory for the year.  Newbury, McGinn, Holmstrom and Straka all finished with a goal and an assist to lead Adirondack .  Cowick registered two goals and an assist to lead the B-Sens, who despite the loss remain one point up on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for first place in the East Division.
