2014 Agenda: Stopping Harassment in Schools

The governor has said he'll propose amending a law to require school officials to report harassment and discrimination against students to law enforcement.

Cuomo highlighted a case at Pine Bush High School where a lawsuit is pending charging physical and verbal anti-Semitic attacks.

Local officials say there are already provisions in place to report acts of harassment.

The Dignity For All Students Act, which took effect in July of 2012 schools are responsible for collecting and reporting data regarding material incidents of discrimination and harassment.

"There's already an expectation that that's out there and  it may not require new legislation. It just may be something the State Education Department should reinforce, re-communicate, and make sure we're all living up to the obligations we're already under," said Allen Buyck, Superintendent of Broome-Tioga BOCES.

The Dignity For All Students Act requires officials to report acts of bullying and harassment to the state department of education.
