Local Government Officials Respond to Medical Marijuana
1/6/2014 (Updated 10:59:40 PM)And local government officials respond to Governor Cuomo's plans to legalize medical marijuana in 20 hospitals across the state.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo supports the step, saying medical marijuana has been proven to help with medical problems including post traumatic stress disorder, glaucoma, and chemotherapy. District Attorney Gerald Mollen says he doesn't see a lot good in either way and there will be no change for anyone violating the law.
"The people that are actually prosecuted are actually trafficing larger amounts, and that's going to remain unchanged. We're going to continue to prosecute those cases," said Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen.
"The governor has been very cautious about moving into this at all, because he sees what's happening in other states and across the country. But this is the beginning of what eventually turns into a call for regulation and taxation and full legalization," said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.
Lupardo says the marijuana that will be used in these instances will be product that has already been seized by the DEA. She says this could become a potential issue, because medical grade marijuana is grown under very strict regulation and that the system will need to be tweaked once in place.
