B-Sens need OT again for 7th straight win

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. Binghamton rallied back after Chris Wideman knocked home his second power-play strike of the night 1:26 into overtime giving the hosts the 6-5 win over Syracuse.

Stephane Da Costa started the scoring off for the second straight night with his 11th goal of the season 3:34 into the first period off helpers from linemates Cole Schneider and Mike Hoffman.  However, Syracuse scored a pair of goals 23 seconds apart to take the lead heading into the first intermission.  Brett Connolly notched his seventh goal of the year at the 5:40 mark before Geoff Walker skated through the Binghamton defense and beat netminder Andrew Hammond.  Cedrick Desjardins started in net for the Crunch and managed to stop 10 of 11 shots faced in the first 20 minutes of play while Hammond finished the opening period turning aside 10 of 12 Crunch chances.

Despite being on a power play to start the middle frame, Binghamton turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Joey Mormina put home a rebound off of Evan Rankins shot to increase the Crunchs lead to 3-1.  Binghamtons power-play unit responded with two goals just over two minutes apart to bring the score back even 3-3.  Jim OBrien notched his fifth marker of the year at 1:13 of the second off a pass from Hoffman before Shane Prince took another great feed from Hoffman to even the scoreboard.  Syracuse relieved Desjardins from the net following Princes goal giving way to Kristers Gudlevskis to take over.

Just before the end the of second period Syracuses Cedric Paquette was called for a five minute major for boarding giving the Senators an extended man advantage coming into the final period of regulation.  Binghamtons power-play unit wasted no time when Wideman knocked home his fourth tally of the year into a wide open goal mouth off a cross crease feed from Schneider.  Less than 40 seconds later Da Costa increased the home teams lead to 5-3 when he weaved through the Crunch defense before burying a wrister glove side on Gudlevskis.  Syracuse refused to go home quietly as Connolly converted on the power-play at 8:06 of the period before Mormina sent home his second goal of the night with just under three minutes to play in regulation forcing overtime.

Syracuses penalty trouble followed them all night as Binghamton began the extra period on the power-play after Evan Rankin was whistled for goaltender interference with just eight seconds remaining in regulation.  Wideman received a pass from Hoffman and one-timed it past Gudlevskis to keep the B-Sens undefeated in overtime and improve the win streak to seven straight for the second time this season.  Binghamton finished the night five for seven on the man advantage.

Hoffman finished with four assists for the night and Schneider added three while Da Costa and Wideman each notched a pair of goals to lead Binghamton offensively.  Connolly ended the game with two goals and an assist while Mormina chipped in two goals in the losing effort.  Hammond managed 26 saves for the night for his eighth victory of the season.  Gudlevskis allowed three goals in relief earning the loss.

Binghamton hits the road tomorrow against Wilkes-Barre for their last of four games in six nights.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:05p.m.
