1/4/2014 (Updated 10:52:47 PM)BALTIMORE, MD. Sara Tarbert scored a game-high 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, leading UMBC (2-11, 1-0 AE) to a 47-32 win over Binghamton (3-11, 0-1 AE) in an America East Conference womens basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Retriever Athletic Center. The loss snaps the Bearcats two-game winning streak.
Tarbert scored nine of her points in the first half as the Retrievers took a 30-18 lead at the break. UMBC went 4-of-8 from three-point range, with Janelle Saling hitting a pair of those shots.
The Bearcats, by contrast, shot only 24 percent during the opening 20 minutes (7-of-29).
It was a tough day for us, particularly in the first half, head coach Nicole Scholl said. Give UMBC credit. They were able to get a lot of layups and hit some big three pointers in the first half.
UMBC opened the second half with a 9-3 run in a span of 5:26 to take a 39-21 lead. The Retrievers led by as much as 45-25 with 8:01 left to go.
In the final eight minutes, however, the two squads combined for only 19 points.
Liz McNaughton added 10 points for the Retrievers.
Sophomore forward Morgan Murphy paced the Bearcats with seven points and five rebounds.
The Retrievers scored 30 of their points in the paint and netted 12 of their points off Bearcat turnovers.
Binghamton heads to UMass Lowell on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
NOTE: Tarbert and Murphy were the America East Players of the Game.
