B-Sens extend streak to six with OT win

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.  The Binghamton Senators survived a late scare from the visiting Manchester Monarchs to win their sixth consecutive game 5-4 in overtime. Mike Hoffman put home a feed from Stephane Da Costa with 35 seconds remaining in the extra period to keep the B-Sens on top of the East Division.

Da Costa started the scoring for Binghamton with his tenth marker of the year just 3:38 into the first period off assists from Cole Schneider and Hoffman giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. With less than a minute to play, Manchester s power-play unit tied the game at one apiece when Tanner Pearson beat Nathan Lawson for his twelfth goal of the year. Lawson stopped nine of 10 shots faced in the opening 20 minutes while his counterpart Jean-Francois Berube stopped 10 of 11.

Fredrik Claesson grabbed the lead back at the 3:24 mark of the second when he blasted home a short-handed goal and moved Binghamton s league-leading short-handed goals to nine for the year. Just over five minutes later, the Sens doubled its lead when Chris Wideman ripped home a power-play goal off assists from Andre Petersson and Hoffman. With two minutes remaining in the middle frame, the Monarchs converted once again on the man advantage with A.J. Gale bringing the visitors within one from his fifth goal of the season.

Manchester tied the contest at three goals apiece 7:32 into the final period of regulation11111111111 when Brandon Kozun put an unassisted slap shot past Lawson. Just over two minutes later, Binghamton corralled the lead once again when David Dziurzynski managed to tip in Corey Cowicks shot down low with just over 10 minutes to play. However, the Monarchs refused to go away as defenseman Colin Miller took an outlet pass from Berube and wristed home the tying goal just inside the blue line with less than a minute and a half to play.

A back-and-forth overtime period looked as though it would yield to a shootout, but with less than a minute on the clock Da Costa slipped the puck to Hoffman in the slot who then buried it into a wide open goal mouth to keep the Senators undefeated in overtime. Hoffman finished with a goal and two assists while Da Costa ended his night with a goal and a helper to lead Binghamton offensively. Lawson won his fifth consecutive start in net stopping 31 of 35 shots faced.
