Bearcats lose final non-conference game, end 2013 with loss

PHILADELPHIA  Sharpshooting Saint Josephs (8-4) drilled nine first-half three-pointers and pulled away early in a 71-44 win over visiting Binghamton (3-10) Tuesday afternoon at the Hagan Arena.
The Bearcats, who were trying to register their second-straight win over a top-90 RPI program after defeating Bryant on Saturday, instead ran into a buzzsaw in the Atlantic 10 member Hawks.

Saint Josephs came out scorching hot and had a double-digit lead just 3:29 into the contest. The hosts drilled three threes in the first 1:38 and hit 10 of their first 12 shots, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc to stake a 28-6 lead in the games first 11:14. During that opening stretch, BU misfired on 9-of-11 attempts. By the time the first half horn sounded, Saint Josephs had knocked down nine three-pointers and shot 52 percent en route to a 39-15 cushion.

Theyre very good and got off to a great start, head coach Tommy Dempsey said. Saint Josephs was bigger and stronger than I had hoped and we were sluggish defensively to start the game. We defended better as the game went on and played very well defensively after that first seven minutes. I thought we were competitive and I liked that our kids had a good disposition through a struggle. Offensively we couldnt get anything going but kept working and grinding. Obviously it wasnt a good performance but one we can put behind us because we had a pretty good attitude.

Atlantic 10 all-conference guard Langston Galloway led Saint Josephs with a game-high 20 points.

Sophomore guard Karon Waller hit 4-of-8 from the field for a team-high 13 points. Sophomore guard Jordan Reed tallied 12 points with four rebounds. Reed keyed an 11-0 BU run late in the second half with six straight points. Freshman forward Nick Madray added eight points.

Binghamton, which trailed by 24 at the break, only lost three points to that deficit over the final 20 minutes, thanks to 40 percent shooting. The team again played without several key contributors, including starting point guard Yosef Yacob and senior forward Alex Ogundadegbe, who along with junior guard Robert Mansell, are nursing injuries.

The Bearcats open their 16-game America East slate at Maine Sunday afternoon.
