Bearcats clean up in Hanover, win 2nd straight

HANOVER, N.H.  Sophomore guard Kandace Newry scored the winning basket with 19 seconds left, leading Binghamton (3-10) to a 57-56 win over La Salle (5-7) in the championship game of the Dartmouth/Blue Sky Womens Basketball Classic on Monday afternoon at Leede Gym. The win gives the Bearcats their first in-season tournament title since 2003, when it captured the BU/Time Warner Classic.

Junior forward Sherae Swinson scored 19 points and sophomore forward Morgan Murphy added 13 points, leading Binghamton (2-10) to a 56-51 win over UMass (3-10) in the opening round of the Dartmouth/Blue Sky Classic on Sunday afternoon at Leede Arena. The win snaps the Bearcats six-game losing skid.

Swinson scored 13 of her points in the second half while Murphy had 11 of her points in the opening 20 minutes. Each of them also finished with a team-best six rebounds.

It was a game of runs as the Bearcats rallied from a double-digit deficit in the first half and built a double-digit lead in the second half.

In the end, Binghamton was able to hold off a UMass rally.
I am very proud of our team, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We fought back in the first half and made the stops we needed to at the end of the game. Sherae and Morgan both played great.

The Minutewomen made a trio of three-point goals en route to a 22-10 lead midway through the first half.  The Bearcats, however, went on an 11-2 run in the final 5:30 of the first half to pull within 29-28. Murphy led the way with seven points during that stretch.

The Bearcats showed no signs of letting up at the start of the second half, going on a 16-6 run in the first 8:15 to take a 44-33 lead.  Swinson and senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk each netted four points during that stretch.

UMass scored eight straight points to pull within 46-43 with seven minutes to go. Binghamton, however, answered with a 7-0 run to go up 53-43 with 4:45 remaining. Swinson had four points and sophomore guard Kim Albrecht punctuated the stretch with a three-point play.

The Minutewomen reeled off the next six points, closing to within 53-49 with 1:38 left to go. Swinson, however, sank three free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Kymber Hill led the Minutewomen with 12 points.

Binghamton faces LaSalle on Monday at 5 p.m. in the final round of the Dartmouth/Blue Sky Classic.
