Bearcats Drop Road Game to Siena

Karika Cummings scored a game-high 13 points, leading Siena (5-4) to a 49-41 win over Binghamton (1-10) in a non-conference womens basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Recreation Center. The game was televised regionally by Time Warner Sports.

Both teams struggled from the field, with the Bearcats shooting just 27 percent (13-of-48) and Siena only 26 percent (17-of-65). It was Binghamtons 24 turnovers, however, that proved decisive, as the Saints converted them into 22 points.

It was frustrating to have all of the turnovers, head coach Nicole Scholl said. Siena had good defensive pressure and we did not get the shots we wanted. Still, those turnovers hurt us.

Siena broke the game open with a 9-2 run to go up 24-15 with 6:05 remaining in the first half. The Bearcats, however, closed to within 26-23 at the break. Senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk made a layup with one second left to go.

The Saints took command of the game in the opening 5:30 of the second half, going on a 13-4 run to pad their lead to 39-27. Siena drained a pair of three-point field goals during that stretch.

Binghamton pulled to within 41-34 on a three-point field goal by junior guard Gintare Surdokaite with 11:45 remaining. Siena, however, went back up 49-37 on a three-point field goal by Cummings at the 6:01 mark.

Paulk netted a team-high 11 points for Binghamton, marking the fourth straight game she has reached double figures in scoring. Junior forward Sherae Swinson added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Senior forward Julia Barac posted a team-high 12 rebounds. In the last three games, she has averaged 11.7 rebounds per contest.

Tehresa Coles finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Siena.

Up next for Binghamton is the Dartmouth Tournament Dec. 29-30. The Bearcats open up against UMass on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. and face La Salle the following day, also at 5 p.m.
