More Student Housing Coming to University Plaza
12/17/2013 (Updated 11:07:11 PM)The University Plaza on the Vestal Parkway in Vestal is expanding. That means there will be more housing options for Binghamton University students.
The Newman Development Group is in the planning stages of what they call the Metroplex at University Plaza.
The private apartments are coming after the success of Twin Rivers Commons downtown, also built by Newman.
The new complex will include an exercise facility, washers and driers in each apartment, a volleyball court and more.
Newman is demolishing two vacant office buildings in the plaza to make way for the renovation.
"The plaza right now, we think, looks nice, it looks good. But we think we can improve it. So I think for the town, it's a good project. For the university, it does augment everything that they're trying to do. I think students really like it. Being close to campus is really appealing," said Vice President for Student Housing at Newman Development Group Jeff Smetana.
Construction is set to start in 2014. The apartments will be available to students beginning in the Fall of 2015.
