Postal Service's Busiest Day of the Year
12/16/2013 (Updated 11:00:55 PM)Holiday shoppers have invaded the malls, but now they are invading the Post Office.
Monday was the busiest mailing and shipping day of the year.
President of Pack and Mail Sean Harrigan, a shipping business center in Endwell, increased staff and training to prepare for a day that sees four to five times as much business as they normally do.
Harrigan said one thing that people can do to make sure that their packages get to their destination safely is to pack them properly.
Fold the lid of the box to match up the seam to tape it, and don't use wadded up pieces of paper. Instead, use bubble wrap or foam peanuts.
Also, see if you can double box fragile packages.
"This way you're spreading out any impact that would happen to that box. These boxes go on a conveyor belt they're not just gingerly handed from one person to another. And they can fall off a conveyor belt and take a good four to six foot fall," said Harrigan.
Harrigan said that his company will probably ship out around one thousand packages before the day's end compared to the two or three hundred that the facility normally does.
UPS estimates they will pick up 34 million packages Monday.
