Holiday Care Package Sent Overseas to Local Servicemen
12/13/2013 (Updated 6:51:48 PM)They may be thousands of miles from home, but local servicemen and women serving in Afghanistan will get a special treat thanks to folks at SUNY Broome.
Students and staff collected items to send holiday care packages to soldiers from the Southern Tier.
More than 250 pounds of items have been collected and will be on the ground in Afghanistan before by Christmas Day.
One of the organizers is student Kyle Cunningham, a six-year Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq.
"Yeah, and I understand the hardships and the difficulties of being separated from your family for long amounts of time and it's good to see the student body and faculty come together to ship things out and it really makes a difference especially when you get it from somewhere you can recognize as home," said Kyle Cunningham a SUNY Broome student and veteran.
Some popular items include beef jerky, peanut butter, and Cliffbars because they can be carried easily and eaten on the go.
This is the fifth year SUNY Broome has done the event.
