Crouch: Federal Money in Jeopardy if Lawmakers Don't Pass Welfare Control Bill
12/12/2013 (Updated 10:57:08 PM)
New York State may lose federal grant money if Albany lawmakers don't pass a bill to control welfare.
Assemblyman Clifford Crouch is encouraging his peers to pass bill A2386. It controls use of electronic benefit transfer cards. The bill would prohibit people receiving public assistance from gambling and buying items such as alcohol and cigarettes with the EBT cards.
"We're supposed to be helping them with the essentials of life. Not helping them smoke tobacco, buy lottery tickets, go to casinos and things like that. So we want to put some restrictions on that," Assemblyman Crouch said.
The assemblyman says if the bill is not passed within the next couple of months the state will lose 120 million dollars in grants under the Federal Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act.
