Superintendent: Common Core Growth Pains Worth It

Meanwhile, some local education leaders say the growing pains associated with implementing the Common Core are worth it.

Maine-Endwell Superintendent Jason Fossen, whose district is working with Windsor to help implement the new Common Core modules, understands that having a new teacher evaluation system based on new Common Core standards has been stressful.

But, he urges parents to look past test scores when assessing the Common Core.

"That number is just a number at this point in time. It doesn't necessarily reflect what they're learning in the classroom, the value that they're getting out of being exposed to these Common Core learning standards and modules. And there's value, 100 percent, in struggling through the process and growing," said Van Fossen.

Van Fossen says with 45 of the 50 states on board with the Common Core standards meant to get students more college and career ready the Common Core is here to stay.
