Day of Action: Protest Against Common Core
12/9/2013 (Updated 7:56:03 PM)The controversy over the Common Core education standards flared up again Monday.
Educators, students, and union members gathered in Binghamton as part of what advocates called a Day of Action to reclaim public education.
Monday's event in Binghamton was one of nine throughout the state, including in Albany and New York City.
The protesters are calling for a renewed focus on teaching, and not testing. They also want a delay in implementing the Common Core.
"We are also hoping to get support for a three year moratorium that we would like the state legislature to enact to slow down the process and give everyone a time to get the resources they need, the training they need," said Dona Murray of the New York State United Teachers.
The activists also call for adequate funding for public education.
