Binghamton Schools Confirm Asbestos Reports
12/6/2013 (Updated 6:56:19 PM)The Binghamton School District has responded to the asbestos found in three of the city schools after letters were sent home to parents.
Assistant Superintendent Karry Mullins said the asbestos found in West Middle School and Woodrow Wilson were in crawl spaces which have since been sealed.
Tests came back Thursday that found the substance in a window seal in a classroom of Theodore Roosevelt.
The classroom is currently being cleaned and will reopen once tests clear the air space.
"We are going above and beyond with the Coolidge incident, going back through every nook and cranny of the buildings looking for suspect material to ensure that we have found everything that needs to be addressed," Mullins said.
Mullins said asbestos is an ongoing problem in the school district because it was used in the older buildings built before the 70s. The district insists parents have nothing to worry about.
