Nothing says the holidays are here like a festive display of lights - but displaying those bulbs safely is key.
NYSEG is offering the following tips to customers: using only lights and extension cords approved by a recognized testing organization, such as underwriters laboratories - or UI. Also, inspect lights, plugs, and receptacles for worn insulation and loose connections.
"Don't overload electrical outlets. It's very easy to plug power strips into existing outlets to expand your capacity to plug lights and extension cords in. But that can be a very bad thing to do. It can be a fire hazard," said NYSEG spokesperson Clayton Ellis.
