Local Unemployment Numbers Look Hopeful, or So it Would Seem
11/27/2013 (Updated 10:49:04 PM)The unemployment rate in Binghamton is down, but it's not all good news according to a State Labor economist...
The jobless rate in Binghamton was 7.3% in October, down from 8.2% in Cctober of 2012. Much of that was due to increases in jobs in the education, health care, construction, and hospitality fields. But the lower rate is also due, in part, to unemployed workers who have stopped looking for work:
"Some of that, though, is discouraged workers. It at least points out or hints at a discouraged work force coming in and out. We did see a drop in our unemployed count but we also saw a drop in our employed count as well," said Christian Harris, an economist at the New York State Department of Labor.
The unemployment rate in Broome County was 7.4% in October, as opposed to 8.3% in October a year ago.
