FEMA Home Buyouts Underway in Vestal

Homes destroyed by the floods of 2011 in Vestal left vacant for more than two years are now being bought out by the Town of Vestal.

58 properties in Vestal have been accepted into the FEMA flood buyout program. Many of the homes are located in the Twin Orchards neighborhood and Castle Gardens neighborhood.

About eight properties closed Wednesday, and the rest are expected to close in the coming weeks, according to Vestal Code Enforcement Officer Mark Dedrick.

"This has been a relief to both the neighbors that have been surrounded by these homes who have had to deal with this on a daily basis, and for the flood victims themselves.  Many of them were not allowed back in their homes because of the  damage to the homes, they haven't been back in them to this date," said Dedrick.

Dedrick said after the town demolishes the homes, there are no plans in the near future to build or lease the vacant properties which will be owned by the town.
