Senator Libous to Cuomo: Stop Closures
11/26/2013 (Updated 7:04:25 PM)Senator Tom Libous made moves Tuesday in his plans to freeze the closure of mental health facilities in the area.
Along with other local legislatures he met with the governor's office Tuesday to convince them to change their plan.
The Regional Centers of Excellence Plan would consolidate New York's psychiatric hospitals into 15 regional centers.
The concern is that hundreds of local jobs will be lost, and the community will become less safe.
"Our goal is to get them to change the plan. Our goal is to preserve as many jobs in the Southern Tier as we can to preserve mental health services and make sure that dangerous pedophiles that are now under lock and key at Broome Developmental Center are not in the community," said Sen. Thomas Libous.
The senator says the governor was open and listened to their concerns. He says they hope to have more meetings following the holidays to come up with an alternate plan.
