Bearcats late lead disappears in loss

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Radford (3-1) shot 55 percent in the second half and overcame a 14-point deficit to pin a 69-63 loss on Binghamton (1-4) in a mens basketball game Saturday afternoon from the Events Center.

The Highlanders used a 17-4 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good and then hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:15 to close it out. The Bearcats were hindered by 12 missed free throws and BU committed four costly turnovers in a 2:48 span late in the game.

We played good basketball most of the day and if we made our free throws ... were right there at the end, head coach Tommy Dempsey said. I thought we were a little stagnant in the second half and it looked like we were playing not to lose. But Radford is an explosive team and they are further along as a program than we are right now. This is part of our maturation and even though its tough to come up on the short end ... we saw some positive things today.

Binghamton built a nine-point halftime lead and stretched it to 14, 43-29, two minutes into the second half. But the Bearcats missed six of their next eight shots and committed three turnovers during a five-minute stretch, opening the door for Radford. The Highlanders used a 16-4 run to pull within two, 47-45, with 12:59 remaining. Binghamton built its margin back up to six, 53-47, before the decisive 17-4 run by the visitors, who hit 12-of-22 from the field in the second half and converted 14-of-18 free throws.

Sophomore guard Jordan Reed led BU with 16 points and nine rebounds, but his numbers were tempered by 4-of-15 shooting from the field and seven misses at the line. Freshman forward Nick Madray had 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and frontcourt mate Magnus Richards chipped in a season-high 12 points with seven rebounds in 28 minutes of work. Richards scored 10 of his points in the first half and hit 5-of-6 from the floor.

Our freshmen frontcourt was excellent today, Dempsey said. I also thought our freshmen guards gutted through some injuries and played solid.

Radford outscored Binghamton 41-26 in the second half. The Highlanders were led by forward Javonte Green, who tallied a game-high 17 points, thanks primarily to 11-of-13 accuracy from the foul line.

The Bearcats next travel to New Jersey to face St. Peters on Tuesday.

NOTE
The game was delayed 26 minutes midway through the first half after a local transformer outage cut the lights in the building and across campus. Binghamton led 7-6 at the time of the power outage. After the lights came back on, BU stretched its lead to double figures before settling on a 37-28 edge at intermission.
