Former BHS standouts lead Canisius to win over BU

VESTAL, N.Y.  Visiting Canisius (3-1) had three players reach double figures in scoring en route to a 66-53 win over Binghamton in a non-conference womens basketball game on Tuesday night at the Events Center. The game marked the Bearcats final home contest for the next three weeks.

Kayla Hoohuli led the Golden Griffs with 17 points, followed by Tiahana Mills with 15 points and Crystal Porter with 14 points. As a team, Canisius shot 45 percent from the field (22-49).

Junior forward Sherae Swinson led the Bearcats with 17 points, marking the third straight game she has reached double figures in scoring. As a team, however, the Bearcats only shot 35 percent (19-of-54).

We played better than we did the first two games but this team is not about moral victories, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We came out better tonight but had trouble finding the best shots.
With the game tied at 9-9, Canisius took the lead for good with a 10-2 spurt in a span of 3:26 to go up 19-11 with 10:20 left in the first half. Jen Lenox had four points during that stretch.

The Bearcats clawed to within 19-17 at the 5:34 mark of the first half but Canisius widened the gap to 29-23 at the break.

Canisius set the tone for the second half by scoring the first five points to go up 34-23 with 18:10 left in regulation. Hoohuli drained a three-pointer during that span.

Binghamton got to within 51-43 on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Morgan Murphy with 6:32 left to go. From there, however, Canisius responded with a 7-2 run to go up 58-45 with 3:16 remaining.

Senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk added 11 points for the Bearcats.
