Update on MacArthur and Coolidge Elementary Schools
11/19/2013 (Updated 10:59:59 PM)Students and teachers of Calvin Coolidge Elementary in Binghamton will be returning back to their school after the Thanksgiving break.
Doors will reopen December 2nd, after being shut down since the summer due to asbestos.
Since then, students were redistributed throughout the district. At Tuesday night's school board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Karry Mullins said everyone's excited, but putting everything back in order has been a challenge.
Mullins said during the asbestos removal process, some things have been misplaced or lost.
"When they go into the rooms and really realize how much was lost due to this, that brings frustration and loss and all those feelings that go along with that. But, they've really worked hard to maintain professionalism and their optimism that these things can be replaced, and that their number one priority is their students," said Mullins.
Mullins said Smartboards and computers have been gradually installed and classroom furniture is schedule to be installed this week.
Mullins also gave an update on MacArthur Elementary School which is being currently being demolished after it was heavily damaged by the Flood of 2011. Mullins said complete demolition is expect to finish at the end of the week.
Construction of the brand new school is schedule to begin in January weather permitting, Mullin said, with students returning to the school September of 2015.
