'Jackets win 1st Soccer Title

Two nights in a row, the Oneonta Yellow Jackets girls' soccer team came back from a one goal deficit at halftime to win the game.  Sunday's match was the biggest, the state championship.

Undoubtedly partying late into the night, the Oneonta Yellow Jackets are celebrated Sunday night as State Champions after taking down Marcellus 2-1 at SUNY Cortland. 

Trailing the Mustangs 1-0 at the half, the Yellow Jackets only needed the first six minutes of the second half to tie the game up on a Mariah Ruff goal off a Taryn More corner kick.  Both teams would then make several attempts at netting the go-ahead goal, but it would not come until the clock was under two minutes.

With the ball airborne, More corralled it, passed it to Madison Miller who then kicked the ball on net.  There wasn't much power behind the ball, as wind, and rain affected playing conditions.  Soccer can be a fickle game, and as the Mustangs keeper went to make the save, it slipped through her fingers and between her legs and trickled across the goal line. 

The Mustangs had several strong, and desperate attempts to tie the game, but in the end, it was the Yellow Jackets celebrating the victory, and their first State Title in girls Soccer.

For seniors Ruff and Meg Burns who remember all too clearly last year's 3-1 loss to Greece Odyssey on the same field, in the same game, finally getting a State Title after four years is a great way to go out.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Jerry Mackey returns 13 players to his roster next year, including nine of his eleven starters.  Only Burns and Ruff are graduating in June.
