Bearcats fall to Midshipmen on HoF induction day
11/16/2013 (Updated 11:00:22 PM)VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton mens basketball (1-3) shot just 28 percent from the field and trailed from start to finish in a 68-50 loss to Navy (2-2) Saturday afternoon at the Events Center.
The Mids stretched a five-point halftime lead to double digits less than five minutes into the second half and the Bearcats never really threatened, missing 16-of-22 shots in the final period.
We just couldnt get into any rhythm today, head coach Tommy Dempsey said. We didnt play with any effort and energy and I will have to address that. Give Navy credit though ... they executed and played very well.
Sophomore guard Jordan Reed led BUs offense with 13 points and 14 rebounds - registering his second-straight double-double. Freshman guard Marlon Beck II scored 11 points and classmate Nick Madray chipped in nine points.
After sputtering at the start of the game (3-for-17) and trailing 19-8 with 7:41 to play in the first half, BU went on a 15-6 run to pull within one, 24-23, with 2:56 remaining the half. But Navy scored the next seven points and built a 31-26 margin at intermission. The Bearcats then missed their first seven shots of the second half and the visitors used a 10-3 opening run to stretch their cushion. Navy shot 50% over the final period to deny a second-half comeback like the one BU put on Cornell three days earlier, when they registered the eighth-largest road comeback in NCAA history by rallying from 19 points down.
The Mids were led by Tilman Dunbar, who hit 7-of-10 en route to a game-high 17 points.
After playing three games in seven days, Bingamton is off until hosting Radford next Saturday.
